In 1989, California was the first state to launch a Sponsorship program for litter removal. AAHLRSA was instrumental in the adoption of this approach to litter clean up. California is a trendsetter – since it’s introduction of the sponsorship program, many have adopted this business model to help reduce DOT’s litter removal expense.
California’s is home to 38 million residents and has an extensive state highway that includes: 50,000 state highway lane-miles, 87 rest stops, 30,000 acres of landscaped roadside and over 180,000 acres of non-landscaped roadside. Needless to say, California has one of the largest highway systems in the nation. The state’s highway enables the efficient movement of people, goods and services throughout the state, fueling the state’s economy, which is ranked as 8th largest in the World. The health of this economy is dependent upon the continued availability of safe, reliable and well-maintained highways. One significant expense in keeping CA roads maintained is litter removal. Roadside litter removal expense in California was estimated at $62 million statewide in 2014. Help reduce these costs with Adopt-A-Highway!
About the Signs
We provide design support, to maximize the impact of your sponsor signage. We will ensure placement for high visibility and exposure.
Each sign will be placed on the shoulder of the highway, facing traffic.
Highway segments are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
