A Little Adopt-A-Highway History
Adopt-A-Highway Litter Removal Service of America, Inc. (AAHLRSA) was born out of necessity. Our founder, Teryl Macia, originally adopted a segment of Pacific Coast Highway in California as a volunteer. Her motivation was similar to our sponsors today, to gain signage and advertise her small marketing firm. However, after a short time it became clear to Teryl that she did not have the time to clean her mile segment as often and carefully as she would have liked. In response, she went to the Caltrans Adopt-A-Highway Coordinator and asked if she could personally hire a crew to clean the roadway. Teryl realized that she probably was not the only volunteer that had “bit off more than she could chew” and a new marketing concept was born – Adopt-A-Highway Litter Removal Service of America, Inc. Working, first, with the California DOT, Teryl Macia developed a sponsorship program that has been in operation for over 25 years as a women-owned business and spread to 25 markets in 16 states. We have cleaned thousands of miles of U.S. roadways and cannot wait to clean more! In fact, we are expanding services to include sponsorship opportunities for Rest Stops and 511 traffic information services. We are very proud of Teryl and her entrepreneurial spirit, which lead to the creation of AHHLRSA!
