Road Trip

Hit the Road

As the weather heats up and the traditional school year ends, it is time to get out there and HIT THE ROAD! AAA reports that 66% of Americans will take a summer trip in 2016. In fact, the majority of those planning to travel this summer will take 3.5 trips between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Road trips, national parks and theme parks are the most popular types of vacations for families planning to travel this summer.

That’s right Americans are taking road trips! Nearly 56% of travelers are planning a driving vacation this summer, according to AAA. According to Enterprise Rent-A-Car (one of our valued sponsors) more than half of Americans are willing to drive up to 300 miles for a weekend road trip.

Gas prices are expected to remain low, which is contributing to the boost in driving trips. Travelers also say they prefer to drive because of the flexibility it provides once at their destination.

Road Trippin’

road-trip-signSchool is getting out soon, which means summer road trip season. If you are planning a family car trip – and honestly, if you aren’t you should be – where will you go?

Wherever you decide for your adventure, did you know that gas prices will be the lowest gas prices for this time of year since 2005. Still, it might be a good idea to use some technology to keep your trip on a budget. AAA Fuel Cost Calculator allows you to budget your gas, it factors in your car make, model, year and type of road you are using to get from A to B. Fuelcaster.com predicts gas prices 24 hours in advance, so you can plan your fill up – today or tomorrow? It is always a good idea to tune into The Weather Channel to avoid bad weather and road conditions whenever possible. At the very least, be prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws at you by packing an umbrella, waterproof blanket and emergency kit.

To make the road trip more fun for your kiddos, try some of the following:

  1. Classic car games such as I Spy, I am Going on a Picnic and The Name Game.
  2. Give your kids a paper map (Rand McNally, AAA) and let them keep track of exits, scenic spots, towns, etc.
  3. Listen to your kids, if they want to stop at a location DO IT – research and learn about the location. If they get a say, they will be more engaged.
  4. Pack snacks and drinks to avoid the fast-food frenzy. Don’t forget wet wipes for clean-up of any spills or sticky fingers.
  5. Stop at rest stops along the way, not just for the restroom but to burn off a little energy. Pack a jump rope, baseball gear or a Frisbee. Spend 15 minutes or so getting the wiggles out.
  6. Teach your kids NOT to be litterbugs. Take a look at the roadways – are they clean or dirty? Talk to your kids about litter and its impact on our environment.

In our experience, some of the most memorable family vacations happen on the open road. So enjoy and get out there this summer! Oh, and by the way, support those Adopt-A-Highway sponsors you see along the way!
